My earliest memories as a child were of my Dad. He played goalie for the Tignish Aces of the Prince Edward Island Senior League in the 1970’s.
Now I grew up playing hockey as a forward, but I can remember every chance I got when a goalie was needed, I would jump at the opportunity to play nets. That all ended when Pee-Wee hit, and was playing competitive hockey.
When summer hit and our little PEI gang got together to play road hockey (not much road involved as we played at out Callahan Junior High School tennis court), I would play net as much as I could, and during the winter, I would play goalie when playing shinny.
Goalies are like Infanteers. They have the unique characteristic of wanting to be the best, and there are no others like us.
