To be a goalie and drafted by Montreal is an honor all in it's own.  Here's to you Carey, and a long career as a Canadien.  "Behind every great player is an even better parent"  Congrats Jerry and family.  And to Jill W.  Without you, my Price collection would have never got off the ground.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart.  And lastly to Carey, you are a true role model for all kids and fans alike.  Good Luck this season. 5 May 2007, A Night to Remember

Well as a Carey Price fan, I would have to say that I reached the pinnacle of collecting tonight (5 May 07).

Bulldogs were in Winnipeg to play the Moose in game one of the semi's.

Well known that I have been in contact with Carey's billet from Tri-Cities for the last 2 years, she emailed me the other day to let me know that she and her husband were going to fly to Winterpeg to watch Carey play.  I thought that was great, and made plans to watch the game too.

So 4 tickets, and 2 hours later on game day, we were off to the game.  I met up with Jill (Carey's billet), and she handed me a nice little surprise (see pics).

We made plans to go downstairs after the game to meet up with Carey.  While the family and I met up with Jill, she had her friends she was staying with with her.  I met Chet Pickard (Tri City's goalie), his dad, and just drafted (WHL Seattle) brother.  Then walks up Carey's dad, I recognized him as soon as he stopped.  I saw him on TV during the World Juniors this past winter.  Jill introduces me too him , and lets him know about my web site.  I talk to Jerry for a while, he was interested in what I did for a living, and my Custom Sports figures (he and Jill are getting 2 Carey figures on the house).

I thought that was just great, and was very pleased.  Then I overhear someone saying that a huge rain storm is coming in, and I tell Jill that we were going to leave, it is a 2 hours drive back to Brandon, and I wanted to get ahead of the storm and home by midnight.  Then Matthew(6) and Meagan(4) my little rug rats start to cry because we weren't going to meet the Team Canada goalie who they saw on TV, and beat the Moose that night.  We were walking towards the exit, and with all the crying, I stopped and said lets go meet Carey.  We ran after the Price clique, and walked downstairs, waited a bit, and out comes Carey in T shirt and shorts.  He hugs his dad, and all the people there, then Jill introduces us.  All I have to say is wow!  I never asked for any autographs as I already have lots of his cards, but we had a family picture taken by Jill's husband.

He's a good kid, and played very well against the Moose.  Almost had a shutout but the Moose pulled their goalie and they popped one in with 27 seconds left in the game.

On the way home I couldn't stop talking about our little adventure, after asking Matthew and Meagan what they thought of Carey a hundred times, Matthew says "ok daddy we get it, you love him"  I chuckled, and said "no I don't love him Matthew, I did it for you two just as much as for me, he's going to be a great goalie some day, and we met a future Canadiens Star.  We'll (I) never forget this night."

A night to remember for the Oliver Family.

Ty Jill, it was a fun night.

Jerry it was nice meeting you, enjoy my site.

2008 Quest for Carey Price

Even though I have been collecting Price cards before Upper Deck started their mass production of rookies, it was the Upper Deck cards that I was waiting for.

For almost 2 years, I plugged away at ITG cards. When I knew Carey was going to make the “Big Time”, the excitement grew with every series that was released.

For me it all started with the young gun. I knew I wanted as many as I could get, and I have been slowly adding to the yg series all year long. I have 6 now. 3 were pulled from various UD1 boxes, 1 was bought on eBay for fewer than 40 dollars (it was missing the UD logo on that back, and I had it replaced), and the last two cards were through online trading.

I completely skipped Black Diamond, and Trilogy. Of all the UD products in production, these two series don’t impress me one iota. If the cards ever become available through trades, then I’ll have them, however I feel that the price amount to buy these two rc’s is off the wall. To most Price collectors, the BD and Trilogy cards can easily be had through online sales, and usually between 30-45 for Trilogy, and BD goes on avg between 65.00-100.00. Not for me though.

Spx came out next for me. My first box yield the Price auto dual jersey rc. I was so excited, and still smile every time I look at it.

I didn’t buy any UD2. When I saw the extremely poor crop job on the rookie threads, I passed gas, and moved on. Keep in mind that I am up to 13 Victory rookie cards of Carey’s, and I’m not stopping until he is wearing other colors. All my Victories were through online trades, and I’ll try to keep it that way.

I was really excited about SPGU. I bought 2 boxes for the thrill of the hunt. I received a lettermark, but it was Bobby Clark. I then purchased 3 lettermarks. I had the P-R-I, and after doing some numbers decided that resale of these cards would get me other great cards. So I threw up the white flag, and moved on. I don’t have the rc of 99 yet, but it’s my main priority right now. Next to the yg, this year’s SPGU Price card is one of my favourites (yeah I know, they all are).

UD Ice has never been one of my favourite sets, ever! However after 12 boxes I it grew on me. The eye catcher were the Ice Premiers, and the UD Black jersey cards, and auto’s. I never did get the Price /99, but as all cards do, it will come down, and it shall be mine. I did manage to get 4 Blacks, one Ice Premiers (Card of the year for me, but it was Mason Raymond. Nucks4Cup owns it now). Lastly, I am only 10 cards away from the UD Black jersey set. The nicest jersey card produced in 2008.

My last Carey Price cards came from SPA. I bought two boxes. I got the rookie auto in one, and the SOTT in the other. After which I traded for one auto patch, and bought the second online. SPA Limited are truly a awesome card.

I passed on Ultimate and Sweet Shot. Too many sob stories for me to break it.

I bought 2 packs of OPC premier. I won’t do that again haha!

BAP, I bought 2 packs for fun. Not much fun in that haha. But I love the rookies, and the parallel’s . But as per normal you have to be a fan of BAP to buy by the box.

I guess we are at the end now. Ok we aren’t.

My case of the Cup arrived last night.  I had a live online chat room break, and Beckett live break at the same time. I started at 7cdt, and finished near 9. The pre break talk was a flying. There were a ton of guys in the room, and always lots of chatting on what we all want, hope you get this card, and such and such.

I have to say. 2008 The Cup was the most fun I ever had. I received many great rookies. 2 Sam Gagner, one /99, and one rainbow, both outstanding patches. Setoguchi’s patch is wild, and the Robbie Schremp rainbow is freakin crazy.

I said before my break that all I want is one nice Canadiens card. Well I got two. Halak Rainbow /41, and Sergie Kostitsyn.

I think everyone had a great time. I know I did. There was only one smarty pants in the room. Instead of wishing me well, he asked me why I didn’t just buy the Carey Price rookie instead of buying a whole case? My answer was simple. Anyone can just buy what they want, but the thrill of the hunt is in slicing and rippin. He wished me well, and left. (damn Leaf fans).

So there it is. My 2008 adventure. Unless Montreal drafts another goalie that catches my eye and makes me say “this kid has potential”, I should be alright for a few years (Ken Dryden was the last player that I went crazy over). 2009 will be nothing but adding singles. I must say, a little cheaper than 2008.

DId you like the long read? Who gave up after para 2?
