ABOUT ME AND THEN SOME

My name is Sgt Shane Oliver (Oli), I am married, and have 2 small crazy kids. Matthew is 7, and baby Meagan turned 5in April.
Born and raised in Prince Edward Island, left home at 18 to join the Forces (Canadian).
I joined the military in 1990. I have five medals, one citation for courage under fire ( Medak Pocket ), and retire in 2010 at age 38 (maybe later).
My first operation (6 month tour) was in 1993. Our unit was sent to the Former Rep of Yugoslavia. The first 3 months of the tour was uneventful, but that would all change after the Croatians decided to continue on their efforts on the western coast. The area was called the Krajina. It was Sector South that changed my life forever. It was there that I suffered my first major concussion. It was there that I saw death, destruction, engagements and the most hidious of war crimes that haunted me for a very lone time. It wasn’t until our we started losing guys and my friends in Afghanistan, that I got over 1993.
Moving forward to now. I am currently involved with Operations & Training. Due to my concussions (over 7 now), I am no longer allowed to be involved with Military operations overseas. It’s a challenge going from one extreme to the slow pace of retirement. Only time will tell how much longer I will be with my beloved Battalion.
I have a deep love for my Family, Country and the Montreal Canadiens.
My earliest memory of the Montreal Canadiens was from the 70’s. Laying on the floor on a Saturday night, waiting for “the song” to come one, and listening to Danny Gallivan (RIP), and Dick Irvin call the game.
Mr Gallivan was an amazing play-by-play man, and his voice will forever etched in my memory. If you’ve never heard Danny call a game, google or utube his name and pick a long file to listen too.
As a kid my favourite player was Ken Dryden. I can honestly say that I enjoyed each and every goaltender since him. Personal favourites in my collection are Ken Dryden rc’s, Sevigny, Bunny (RIP), Wamsley, Penny, Soetaert, Roy, Moog (short but sweet), TBO (loved his mask), Theodore, Garon, Halak, and of course Carey Price.
During the lockout season (NHL) I was super depressed (just like all fans), I stopped collecting cards. One night I was sitting watching RV87 games, I told myself that I will try my hand at TTM’s (through the mail autographs). But I wanted to be different. Anyone can throw some cards in the mail, type out a generic letter and send them off in hopes to get an auto. I decided to make my own cards. After 30 different trial and error cards, I finally started to get it right. I started with my all time favorite player Mr. Jean Beliveau. I made him 2 cards. I mailed them out in March of 05. I never received anything for a couple of months. In May my wife picked me up from work, on the way home (Brandon) we were talking about my new hobby, and she was hacking on me for wasting my time. I was slowly agreeing with her, thinking that no one will sign my work. Time goes on and she says to me, oh a package arrived in the mail today, I figured it was a Veterans Affairs file, she says it’s in the glove compartment, as soon as I opened it I recognized the bubble mailer as the one I sent to Mr. Beliveau, I opened it up, and was just shocked. He signed 1 to Matthew, 1 to Meagan, and 2 to me. Attached was a nice little note thanking me for everything I’ve done (respect for out military).
Since then I have 11 of 22 Montreal Canadien Hall of Fame members, all personalized to either me, Matthew or Meagan. My kids will have the nicest collection in all of Brandon.
Dickie Moore was the greatest of them all. I sent him 2 cards, which he personalized, and he sent me 3 of his own cards all signed. He wrote me a very nice letter. As I was reading it I was practically shaking with excitement.
Matthew is just amazing at everything he does, and baby Meagan worships the ground he walks on. Those 2 kids are the pride and joy of my life, Lori is the master of it all. She is the most caring person in the world, and to put up with me over the last 14 years, well she deserves a medal.
During televised hockey games, Matthew and Meagan will stand in front of the tv, and sing both national anthems. WOW!
Long read, and I could go on forever, but that’s it for now.
God Bless our Infantry, and God Bless our Boys in Afghanistan.
